Event Assignment: de Young Museum San Francisco, CA

August 3rd, 2012

Ammunition, a design group in SF, celebrated their 5 year anniversary with a very impressive private party at the de Young Museum in San Francisco. As with most event photography, it involved walking around with a camera and blending in with guests eating, drinking, in conversation, and enjoying themselves. We normally don’t look our best while eating and drinking, and it certainly made me worry as I tried to look invisible documenting Ammunition’s event. Above are 2 of my favorites from the night. An interesting part of the assignment was how the final photos were used. Ammunition posted the images on their Facebook page so people could comment and tag each other in the photos. Those folks sure like to party. Cheers to them for the gig, and to another 5 years in SF.

Art Show: California Monotypes + Photography

June 22nd, 2012

My wife Jamie and I have an art show together at The Little House Gallery, a Bay Area Community Center located in Menlo Park, CA. The work will be up through July 9th so please visit if you are in the area. We will not be having an opening reception since this is a community center, but I’d love to see your name in the guest book! You can view the work in person (art always looks better in person), play bingo in the auditorium, take a lesson on how to check your email, and have a cup of coffee with a plate of meatloaf. All of this is true.

Our work in the show is for sale. If you are interested in anything please send an email and I’ll let you know about prices. Jamie has (11) framed 11X14 original monotype prints. Each of my (13) photography prints are 16X24 C-prints, flush mounted on gator board, and protected with a transparent clear coat. We put a lot of love into all of it.

Art Show Benefit for Japan at Surfindian in San Diego

April 2nd, 2011

I donated a photo print to Surfindian’s art show to benefit Japan this weekend in San Diego. My wife Jamie sent one of her monotypes in the middle of teaching our 2 month old son how to rule. Looks like a great show with some really cool artists. We’d love to be there in person, but our hands are a little full. Thanks to Masa and Chris for the invite!

On Saturday, April 2, from 6 p.m.-10 p.m., Surfindian in Pacific Beach, CA will host a special event to benefit earthquake and tsunami-ravaged Japan. The fundraiser will include live and silent auctions, live music from The Red Fox Tails, food, drinks and other surprises. Surfboards, art and other items will be auctioned off from shapers, artists and businesses including: Skip Frye, Michael Miller, Steven Mast, Jim Phillips, Manuel C. Caro, Mike Hynson, Koji Toyoda, Yusuke Hanai, Damian Fulton, Devon Howard, Julie Cox, Skye Walker, Jay Watson, Jamie Watson, Cher Pendarvis, Elise Kirkpatrick, Meegan Feori, Seitaku ”Tak” Aoyama, Susan Wickstrand, Christine Brailsford, Kassia Meador, Tyler Warren, Taylor Dunfee, Sam Cody and many more.

All money raised from the auctions or otherwise donated will be given to the U.S. Japan Council, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Surfindian is a surf shop and gallery located in Pacific Beach, California. Surfindian features art-driven, small batch products that reflect an individualized approach to the art of surfing.

Goodbye Mr. Penn

October 7th, 2009

Irving Penn (June 16, 1917–October 7, 2009) lived to be 92.

Irving Penn is on vacation.

“Beautiful and boring,” wrote New Yorker magazine’s Janet Malcolm in a review of an exhibit of the butts at the Museum of Modern Art in 1975.

“He considered himself a workman,” said photography historian Diana Edkins, a former curator of photography for Conde Nast Publications, including Vogue, now with Aperture Press. “His uniform was his way of saying, ‘I may be king of fashion photography but I’m not going to play that game.’ “

His unfailing courtesy and formidable reputation elevated him to a level generally saved for legendary figures in the arts. By mid-life most people who knew him called him, “Mr. Penn” as a show of supreme respect.

Mattson Family Art Benefit – June 26th San Diego

June 20th, 2009

Mattson Family Art Benefit Poster

Poster Art by Julie Goldstein, designed by Mark Tesi

The surf/art communities have banded together to help the parents of the Mattson 2, a stylish mod duo formed by twin brothers Jonathan (drums) and Jared Mattson (guitar). The Mattson 2 keep a relentless schedule playing and recording their own music while also supporting various surf realted events, movies, art shows, and shops across the world. Their father Jan has been diagnosed with colon cancer, and their mother Arlene had surgery in February to remove a brain tumor. With both parents being self employed, a silent auction art benefit has been formed to help cover some of Jan and Arlene’s medical expenses.

For the past few months my wife Jamie has helped to organize art for the show. She has received work from both coasts and abroad. Our home is now stacked with some amazing pieces that we will be driving to San Diego next week to hang with Chris Rule of Surfindian. Road trip! Looking forward to June 26th. Hope to see some of you there.

Noir City • Hollywood Film Noir Festival

April 3rd, 2009

If you’re in LA the next 2 weeks, I’ll be jealous!

April 2nd – 19th. NOIR CITY invades Hollywood. The historic Egyptian Theatre will host the festival’s 24 films, 22 of which are unavailable on DVD. The American Cinematheque co-presents with the Film Noir Foundation. The FNF’s own Alan K. Rode and Eddie Muller will present films along with a few surprise guests. For more upcoming events at the Egyptian Theatre subscribe to the AC’s blog here.

While The City Sleeps

Playing Sunday April 12th 7:30 PM WHILE THE CITY SLEEPS (1956) Dir. Fritz Lang

“The streets and alleys keep getting darker, the tough guys tougher and the femmes more fatale. So to prepare you for dealing with the nocturnal netherworld out there (and hold you over till you can glimpse the light at the end of the tunnel), we’ll be screening more grand forays into the heart of darkness.” – Egyptian Theatre

Playing Sunday April 12th BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT (1956) Dir. Fritz Lang

Why would a man frame himself… for murder? April 12th is a Fritz Lang double feature night, and Beyond A Reasonable Doubt is one of the most bizarre and original noir films ever made. Dana Andrews plays a willing sucker who takes on the challenge to frame himself for murder. Although innocent, he deserves what turns into a nightmare for being such a perfectly skilled criminal. The underrated bombshell Barbara Nichols (Sweet Smell Of Success), adds a charming highlight to this knucklehead plot. This just in…Peter Hayms directed the remake starring Michael Douglas and is due May 1st 2009.

Full movie schedule with descrptions of each film here.
