Out And Back: A Cycling and Trail Running Shoot

If you were a fitness freak in the Bay Area with a good map, you could spend every weekend on a new trail or piece of pavement running or cycling. The open space preserves alone off Skyline Drive (route 35) from San Francisco to Highway 17 in Santa Clara, have an interconnected trail system that could keep you occupied for a lifetime. Not to mention Marin County, Oakland Hills, Diablo Hills, Morgan Hill, or Santa Cruz. For a photographer in the area, there are a million spots to choose from for a sports, fitness, cycling, running, or hiking location shoot.

Below are a few selections from a shoot with athlete Silvia Durruthy Durruthy at some spots in San Mateo, Woodside, and Sky Londa. Most spots are within a 30 minute drive which allowed us to get a wide variety within a single afternoon.

Here is a suggestion for shooting running or cycling – lay down on the off-camber section or downward slope of a trail or road to shoot from below the surface. From this position, try to shoot at an angle to create leading lines that point to your subject, and/or get some out of focus business in the foreground. Three images in this series were shot from a downward slope, because after all don’t most subjects look better from a low POV?
